Laser designator

sight

A laser designator is a compact device that forms a spot of light on the target that coincides with the center point of impact. It allows you to increase the effectiveness of the weapon at short ranges, the speed of pointing and the accuracy of firing at point blank range.

Design and principle of operation
It consists of the case fixed on the weapon, power supply unit and special laser diode with minimum beam divergence. It could be operated by a push-button located at a convenient place for the shooter, e.g. in the vicinity of the trigger.

Laser designator is not a weapon sight in the literal sense of the word, but an auxiliary sight of limited range and accuracy. Sometimes the LWS is used together with collimator, night or day telescope sights.

Advantages
simplicity and high speed of aiming;
Minimal weight and dimensions;
Simple and reliable design.

Disadvantages
short range;
The light spot of the light source de-emphasizes the shooter;
Bright sunlight can shine on the marker.

Applications
Laser designators are mostly used for self-defense, in the army, law enforcement and security agencies to perform tactical tasks, often in conjunction with other sighting devices. In hunting, the LWS is rarely used, usually with smooth-bore weapons. Remember the cats that chase the laser? Wild animals react in much the same way: they just get spooked by the light spot and prefer to hide.
